The 24-hour Global Heat Flow Day is an annual event organized by the International Heat Flow Commission (IHFC) to foster scientific exchange among geoscientists, with a particular focus on heat flow research. This event features a continuous 24-hour virtual live session, allowing participants worldwide to discuss current developments, explore new heat flow data, and receive guidance on adapting their research data to meet the requirements of the Global Heat Flow Database (GHFDB). By providing a collaborative platform, the initiative aims to enhance the quality, accessibility, and reliability of heat flow data—an essential resource for geoscientific research.
The inaugural Global Heat Flow Day was held on February 22, 2022, and has since become an annual tradition. During its first three years, the event focused on the global assessment process and the revision of the Global Heat Flow Database, offering participants a forum for discussing the new IHFC data structure and quality scheme (learn more). Starting in 2025, the event has evolved to broaden its scope, addressing a wider range of heat flow research topics and projects. It now features open presentations and webinars, encouraging participants to share insights on measurement techniques, data analysis, modeling approaches, and ongoing research initiatives.
Through Global Heat Flow Day and other initiatives, the IHFC actively promotes collaborative efforts to assess, refine, and update each data entry compiled since 1939. Contributors to this effort are acknowledged as co-authors in associated database releases.
The IHFC invites all researchers to participate in Global Heat Flow Day, emphasizing that collective contributions strengthen the quality and impact of global heat flow data—a critical resource for geoscientists worldwide.

On 26th February 2026, the 5th 24-hour Global Heat Flow Day will take place. We invite you to participate next year by giving a 20- to 30-minute presentation on a heat-flow-related topic. This could include an introduction to a heat-flow-related subject, like measurement techniques, data analysis, modeling techniques, correction approaches, projects, funding opportunity, etc., or giving insights into ongoing studies or research projects. If you are interested in this teaching, communication and networking opportunity, please use the table linked below to enter your proposed topic title, name, and preferred time of day (in UTC).
Important Details:
- Deadline for response: Please submit your topic and details by 15th January 2026 at the latest.
- Recording sessions: We plan to record all sessions and make them available on the IHFC homepage afterward. Kindly indicate in the table if you consent to your session being recorded.
- Slides templates: We intend to provide a presentation slide template to ensure consistency. This will be provided to you once the program is scheduled.
Once we’ve gathered all responses, we will schedule and arrange the time slots based on your availability. A public announcement will follow in the first week of February.
Our goal this year is to organize for the first time 24 presentations in 24 hours. I hope that you like to contribute to this event. Thank you for your enthusiasm and support in making this event successful!
The 4th Global Heat Flow Day took place on Tuesday, Feb 25, 2025 (1 am GMT until 9 pm GMT). Eight presentations were given, attended by 133 visitors.
